Why has the market become so unforgiving of AI earnings? Sam Boughedda Mon, November 2, 2026 at 8:14 AM EST 2 min read ^GSPC -1.82% US500 Investing.com -- Yardeni Research told investors in a new note that the stock market has become unforgiving of AI-related earnings because analysts' expectations have grown so extraordinary that they leave little room for disappointment.

"In our view, industry analysts are projecting such extraordinary earnings growth that it's becoming hard to believe and leaves little room for disappointment," the firm wrote.

Consensus S&P 500 operating EPS forecasts have climbed to $366 for 2026, $425 for 2027 and $494 for 2028, compared with Yardeni's forecasts of $375, $425 and $450. Analysts' five-year long-term earnings growth expectation has risen to 25.6%, the highest on record.

Much of that optimism reflects the AI investment boom. The information technology sector's long-term earnings growth expectation has climbed to 41.9%, while semiconductors are at 66%.

Yardeni noted that the S&P 500's forward P/E has fallen to 18.5 from above 22 earlier this year, even as long-term growth expectations surged. That suggests investors are reluctant to pay up for exuberant forecasts.

"The result is an extraordinarily high bar for corporate earnings and a market quick to punish disappointment," the firm said.

However, Yardeni said this skepticism should help prevent an AI bubble, acting as a financial constraint alongside political, social and physical limits.

"There are simply too many guardrails in place to allow the AI boom to run completely unchecked," it said.

The firm also highlighted strong economic data. Real GDP grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter, but core PCE inflation remains at 3.1% year over year. Yardeni continues to believe the Fed should return policy to neutral, which it estimates at 4.25% to 4.50%.
