Elon Musk expects computing capacity added in orbit to surpass new installations on Earth by late 2028, with the gap potentially widening the following year.
The prediction signals a potential shift in SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) investment priorities as the company expands its AI infrastructure. Its Colossus 2 facility in Memphis already ranks among the world's largest AI computing sites, with an estimated 1.11 million Nvidia H100-equivalent GPUs, according to Epoch AI. The research group projects that capacity could reach 1.82 million in early 2027.

Musk's outlook comes alongside an ambitious financial projection from Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire, who estimates SpaceX revenue could climb from $51.5 billion in 2026 to $731 billion in 2028.
His model also assumes $369 billion in capital expenditures during 2028, with free cash flow turning positive around midyear.
These figures are projections, not company guidance. Maguire identified political and supply-chain constraints as potential obstacles, while Musk argued that SpaceX's capital efficiency may be underestimated. He has also acknowledged that operating costs remain a challenge for AI services.
