exclusive New York Yankees Brian Cashman tells The Post Anthony Volpe is in ‘fluid situation’ with possible position switch By Ryan Dunleavy Published May 6, 2026, 2:01 p.m. ET New York Yankee GM Brian Cashman participates in the BTIG Charity Day where celebrities, athletes, etc. join to support charities worldwide by donating trading profits, Wednesday, May 6, 2026, in New York, NY. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Brian Cashman is filing the Yankees’ decision to option former top prospect Anthony Volpe to Triple-A under the heading of a good problem to have.

“We’re paid to make very difficult decisions,” the Yankees general manager told The Post at BTIG Charity Day. “This year’s Yankees team is a lot deeper. We have a lot more choices. And (Jose) Caballero has emerged with his play, and so we kind of had to honor that. He snuck up on us a little bit, but that’s good.”

Volpe sounded reluctant to shift from shortstop to utility infielder during Tuesday’s interview with The Post while playing in Worcester, Mass.

Top prospect George Lombard is a shortstop by trade but has played some second base and third base in the minors and will have to be versatile while teaming with Volpe for Scranton-Wilkes Barre.
