Major potato chip brands issue recall over fears of Salmonella contamination

A popular potato chip brand has recalled some of their products due to potential risk of salmonella. FDA A popular potato chip brand has issued a voluntary recall after a potential Salmonella risk.

Utz Quality Foods LLC, a subsidiary of Pennsylvania-based Utz Brands Inc, recalled some varieties of its Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips due to a potential contamination linked to milk powder.

The impact chips have seasoning that contained dry milk powder manufactured by California Dairies, which may be contaminated with Salmonella, the Food and Drug Administration said in a recall notice.

The company noted in the recall that the affected seasoning batches did test negative for salmonella prior to use, but they’re recalling the chips “out of an abundance of caution.”

To date, there have been no complaints of illness reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products, but the FDA warns against consuming the recalled products and advises consumers to discard them or contact Utz’s customer care about a refund.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Common symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within six hours to six days after eating a contaminated product. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.

Utz has recalled a limited number of Zapp’s and Dirty brand chips, which are available at retail stores nationwide.

The affected items are limited exclusively to the following products:

The new comes shortly after the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a health alert for several meat and poultry products that contained contained dry milk powder that had already been recalled.
