Best colleges for frats and sororities in America ranked — and California made the top 10

California has landed a spot in America’s top 10 colleges for Greek life, with the University of Southern California ranking No. 7 in a new 2026 list based on student and alumni reviews.

The table, compiled by college ranking platform Niche, evaluates campuses across the country using firsthand feedback from students about their experiences in fraternities and sororities.

While Southern schools dominate the top of the list, USC stands out as California’s lone representative, highlighting both the size and influence of Greek life in Los Angeles.

At the top of the rankings is Florida State University, followed by Tulane University at No. 2 and University of Alabama at No. 3 — schools long known for deeply embedded Greek traditions and large-scale participation.

USC’s inclusion reflects its massive Greek system, which includes more than 35 to 40 recognized fraternities and sororities spanning five governing councils, such as the Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council (PHC), and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC).

Altogether, more than 2,200 students are involved in Greek life on campus.

Popular organizations include nationally recognized fraternities like TKE, Pike, and Sigma Chi, as well as sororities such as Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi — all of which are known for strong campus engagement and alumni networks.

However, USC’s Greek system has not been without controversy.

In August 2022, six USC fraternities disaffiliated from the university following the implementation of strict safety regulations.

Those rules — which included tighter recruitment oversight and party restrictions — came in response to numerous allegations of sexual assault and drink spiking reported in 2021.

In total, more than 10 fraternities cut ties with the university, pushing back against what they described as an aggressive crackdown.

The changes followed intense student protests condemning what demonstrators called a “toxic” Greek life culture.

The backlash also led to the suspension of the Sigma Nu chapter, underscoring the growing tension between university leadership and fraternity members.

Despite those challenges, USC continues to rank highly for Greek life, suggesting that its social scene remains a major draw for students — particularly those seeking a balance between academics and an active campus life.

Nationally, the top-ranked schools reflect a mix of strong academics and highly visible social cultures.

At Florida State University, students praised the “welcoming and inclusive” environment alongside a vibrant party scene. At Tulane University, reviewers highlighted a balance of academic rigor and social opportunities in one of the country’s most culturally rich cities.

Meanwhile, University of Alabama continues to be synonymous with large-scale Greek life, where participation plays a central role in campus identity.

Other schools rounding out the top 10 include University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Georgia, and Pennsylvania State University, each boasting strong student satisfaction and active fraternity and sorority systems.

Niche’s 2026 Best Greek Life Colleges ranking is based entirely on student and alumni reviews.

The methodology relies on survey responses in which students rate Greek life on a 1–5 scale, supplemented by firsthand accounts of social culture, chapter strength, and community, along with internal quality checks on submitted reviews.

Because student surveys account for 100% of the ranking’s weight, the results may be subject to bias or skew.
