And as they’re showing again across town, a positive outcome isn’t automatic, no matter how deep the wallet or how willing to open it.

Perhaps jaded by the record 27 World Series championships and the former owner constantly claiming anything short of that is a failure, Yankees fans fail to appreciate the consistency of Cashman. Thanks to the 22-11 start — one rival GM said, admiringly, “they look like they may win the World Series” — this is a rare year when we aren’t hearing from Yankees fans about why Cashman should be fired.
By now, that brand of idiocy is hopefully extinct. The record shows he’s among the very best.
We shouldn’t have to look eight miles away, to Flushing, to understand how special Cashman’s portfolio is. But the Mets do provide a nice reminder that wins aren’t given, that things go wrong over 162 games. The Mets can’t possibly be as terrible as they’re showing lately, but the Mets may be headed for their 15th losing season in those 29 winning Yankees years.
