Staggering number of speed demons cited for driving over 100 mph during California crackdown

California’s fastest drivers faced a rude awakening as California Highway Patrol officers unleashed a major crackdown, handing out 11,767 speeding tickets in a single day. Among them, 200 speed demons were caught flying past 100 mph.

In total, CHP issued 19,564 citations for various violations and 2,807 warnings.

The California Highway Patrol launched its “maximum enforcement period” Tuesday morning, sending officers statewide on a mission to hunt down dangerous drivers, according to ABC7.

“Speeding isn’t just a violation, it’s one of the leading factors in serious and deadly crashes,” the agency warned.

The crackdown comes after CHP officers issued more than 491,000 speeding tickets last year, while preliminary figures show speeding played a role in more than 110,000 crashes — leaving over 400 people dead and roughly 68,000 injured.

“Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on California’s roadways,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said, warning that higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase danger for everyone on the road.

Under the Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets—or FAST—program, drivers caught going more than 100 mph can have their cases automatically sent to the DMV, where licenses may be suspended or revoked.

Officials are urging motorists to obey speed limits, adjust their speed to road and weather conditions, stay focused behind the wheel, and drive responsibly.
