Quarterback P.J. Walker retires at 31 years old after overcoming odds for NFL shot

The pride of Temple University is calling it a career.

P.J. Walker, 31, announced his retirement from football, as he was playing in the Canadian Football League for the Calgary Stampeders.

The team had announced he was taking a leave, but eventually confirmed he was stepping away from the game completely.

PJ Walker last played in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns. Getty Images After going undrafted and landing on the Colts’ practice squad from 2017-19, Walker got a chance to show off his skills in the XFL, where he played for the Houston Roughnecks and turned into the league’s biggest star.

Walker, who was raised in New Jersey, led the XFL in passing touchdowns before the league shut down due to the COVID pandemic.

Thanks to his strong performances in the XFL, Walker was given a chance to showcase himself with the Panthers and he finally made an active roster under head coach Matt Rhule in 2020.

Walker played in 15 games for the Panthers over three seasons and wasn’t exactly productive, though the Panthers have not exactly been a standard of excellence this decade.

The Panthers are 32-69 since 2020, the NFL’s second-worst record ahead of only the Jets.

PJ Walker was best known for a solid few seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Getty Images Walker ended his NFL career with six touchdown passes, 16 interceptions with 2,135 passing yards in four seasons.

He last played in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns in 2023.

Walker’s best career moment arguably came in his first start against the Lions, a game they won, 20-0, in 2020. Walker went 24-for-34 passing for 258 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

The quarterback tallied 74 passing touchdowns during his time with Temple.
