Cincinnati knew of star quarterback’s gambling problem in stunning reveal

At the center of every scandal is the same defining issue: who knew what, and when they knew it.

In a bombshell new report from USA Today, Cincinnati learned last summer that quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who played two seasons with the school, was betting on sports.

That could put the Bearcats in the NCAA’s crosshairs because the quarterback played the entire 2025 season.

While the school declined to comment to the media on the investigation, it could be penalized if it is found that it let Sorsby play the season while knowing about his gambling history.

Multiple outlets have reported that Sorsby placed numerous bets, including on his own team, dating back to his 2022 season with Indiana, where he bet on the Hoosiers to win in a game he did not play in.

The Cincinnati Enquirer also notes that the legal age to bet on sports in Indiana is 21, which means Sorsby was also underage when he placed those wagers while he was enrolled at Indiana.

On3 Sports reported Tuesday that Sorsby also attended Cincinnati Reds games and live-bet on balls and strikes on several occasions.

Sorsby’s lawyer asked that the lawsuit be thrown out on the same day that the news of his betting infractions became public.

Sorsby is currently undergoing treatment for a gambling addiction, the team said in a statement Monday.

“Texas Tech’s primary focus remains on fostering an environment where student-athletes feel empowered to prioritize their mental health and seek professional assistance,” the statement read. “To protect the integrity of the recovery process, Texas Tech will have no further comment on Brendan’s status or treatment progress at this time.”
