Rose Byrne Defends Bobby Cannavale For Missing The Golden Globes For A Reptile Expo: “It’s For Our Children”

Rose Byrne is defending her partner, actor Bobby Cannavale, after she revealed the hilarious reason why he missed her first Golden Globe win.

The actress’ Golden Globe win for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You was overshadowed by her acceptance speech, in which the actress thanked Cannavale and shared he wasn’t in the room that night because “we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey.” The moment earned plenty of laughter from the audience. But Byrne shared in an interview with The New York Times that she regretted sharing that piece of information that night.

“Never in my life will I announce something like that on a major awards show again,” she said.

The moment reportedly led people to believe Cannavale attended the reptile expo because he wanted to. But Byrne explained it was strictly for their kids. “Everyone was thinking it’s for Bobby. It’s not! It’s for our children. The children,” Byrne explained.

Byrne’s family did get that bearded dragon, after all. She gave an update days later when she called into Today With Jenna & Sheinelle after receiving her first Oscar nomination.

“He’s so sweet. He’s so sweet,” she said about the new family pet, per People. “We’re all smitten. The kids are happy, such a sweetie.” Byrne added that they were still “undecided” on what to name him.

The actress took home the Golden Globe award for best female actor in a musical or comedy, marking the first Golden Globe win of her career. Her acceptance speech featured several hilarious moments, including a quip about their “tiny film.”

“We shot this in 25 days for like $8.50,” she joked. “Thank you so much. This is like a tiny film so it’s a huge deal to be be here.”

She continued, “My brother’s my date, thanks George! Thanks to my mom and dad who bought Paramount+ so they could watch the Golden Globes from Sydney. I want to thank my husband, Bobby Cannavale, who couldn’t be here because we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey. So thank you baby.”

The actress admitted the win was a total shock. She told the Times she felt “totally out of my depth and inarticulate” when she took the stage without a speech prepared.

“I was texting so many people later, saying, ‘I’m sorry, I forgot to say thank you to this person and that person,’” she said. “And Conan [O’Brien] was like, ‘Shut up, it was great. No one wants to hear someone bang on for hours.’ He’s become an unofficial life coach. He’s lovely.”

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is streaming now on HBO Max.
