Chinese girl insists on remaining by grandparents’ tombs; her nearby vigil moves many

In China, grandparents often develop stronger emotional bonds with their grandchildren than with their own children

2-MIN READ2-MINAlice Yanin ShanghaiPublished: 6:00pm, 24 Apr 2026A young girl in southwest China firmly refused to leave the tombs of her grandparents, who had died within six months of each other, and would sometimes sleep there.

A touching video that melted millions of hearts on social media shows the girl, whose age was not disclosed in the report, lying in front of a tomb in Liupanshui, Guizhou province, in mid-April, as reported by Dafeng News.

In the viral video, she occasionally sat up and casually ate from a box of cake.

When her parents urged her to leave, the girl declined, choosing instead to stay longer and expressing her desire to sleep near the tombs.

She explained that she had been raised by her grandparents since birth and had forged a profound bond with them. While her father has been busy with work, her mother has been struggling with health issues.

According to her father, surnamed Chen, her grandmother died of an undisclosed disease in September last year, and her grandfather passed away from heart disease in March.
