‘Incredible’ California destinations make ultimate US glamping list

California is once again proving it does the outdoors better than just about anyone.

A high-end desert retreat near Joshua Tree National Park has landed on a new list of the best glamping experiences in the country — blending rugged scenery with boutique-hotel comforts just a few hours from Los Angeles.

The sleek Airstream setup at AutoCamp Joshua Tree is among the top sports in the US for travelers looking to rough it — without actually roughing it, the new National Geographic list that ranked the SoCal desert spot as the sixth “incredible” experience.

Set in the Mojave Desert, the camp swaps traditional tents for polished silver trailers decked out with full bathrooms, kitchenettes and plush sleeping quarters. Private fire pits and outdoor seating areas give guests front-row seats to Joshua Tree’s otherworldly landscape — minus the hassle of pitching a tent.

The site is built around a central clubhouse featuring a bar, lounge and general store, creating waht the company describes as a “design-forward experience” that mixes nostalgia with modern convenience.

The concept reflects the broader boom in so-called “glamping” — a hybrid of glamorous and camping —the has surged in popularity as travelers look for easier ways to access the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

While old-school camps in places like Yosemite National Park and Yellowstone National Parl date back to the 1800s, today’s versions lean into upscale touches like king beds, ensuite bathrooms and even geodesic domes with panoramic views.

And with lodging inside major parks often booked months — or even years — in advance, many of these privately run camps just outside park boundaries are becoming the go-to workaround.

California scored twice on the rankings, with Yosemite’s historic Curry Village also earning a nod for its old-school tent cabins that offer a throwback to early park tourism — albeit with fewer frills.

Still, it’s the Joshua Tree outpost that sounds out for SoCal travelers, offering an easy, two-hour esacpe fro city life with a luxury twist.
