Kansas City Chiefs coach arrested day before NFL draft

Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was arrested just hours before the start of the NFL draft, according to authorities in Kansas.

Johnson County jail records show Merritt was booked on Wednesday on one charge of domestic battery.

Merritt is slated for arraignment later Thursday on one misdemeanor count of domestic battery; knowing or reckless bodily harm to family.

Further details surrounding the allegations against Merritt were not made immediately available.

Merritt, 54, has been around the NFL for nearly the entirety of his life. He played linebacker in the league in the 1990s and began his run as an NFL assistant coach in the 2000s.

Merritt was on Jets, Giants and Cardinals staffs before he joined Andy Reid in Kansas City in 2019.

Merritt has won five Super Bowls in his coaching career.

The Chiefs are slated to pick two times during the first round of the NFL draft — holding selections Nos. 9 and 29 thanks to an offseason trade with the Rams.
