HKU and CUHK retain places in the top 10, while the Education University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University make their debut on the list
2-MIN READ2-MIN ListenWilliam YiuPublished: 9:02pm, 23 Apr 2026For the first time, all eight Hong Kong public universities have been ranked among the top 100 in a widely watched Asian league table, with the city’s two oldest tertiary institutions ranking among the region’s top 10.
Phil Baty, chief global affairs officer of Times Higher Education (THE), also highlighted Hong Kong’s role as a world-leading education hub, noting it remained the only metropolis with as many as five universities listed in the global top 100 since 2024, an achievement he said no other major cities, such as London or Boston, could match.
The British-based organisation published its Asia University Rankings on Thursday, with the University of Hong Kong retaining sixth place, while the Chinese University of Hong Kong dropped one position to 10th.
Meanwhile, the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) placed 37th as the second-highest new entrant, with Lingnan University ranking 84th.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) maintained 12th place, followed by City University, which rose two places to 14th. Polytechnic University retained 18th place, while Baptist University recorded the biggest improvement among local institutions, climbing from 50th to 40th.
In the top 10, mainland China’s Tsinghua University held the top spot for the eighth consecutive year, while Peking University remained second for the seventh straight year. The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University retained third and fourth places, respectively.
