In two separate special alerts issued at 6pm, the Observatory said an area of intense thundery showers associated with upper-air disturbances was affecting the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta, with downpours expected to be “heavier over parts of the territory shortly”.

It called on any residents outside to seek safe shelter as soon as possible, as “intense gusts” could affect the city.

The forecaster also said that the city would be appreciably cooler by Friday under the influence of the northern monsoon associated with a cold front.

According to the latest nine-day forecast, the minimum temperature will go from 23 degrees on Thursday to 19 degrees the next day, accompanied by occasional showers – which would be heavy at times – and a few squally thunderstorms.
