Twenty-five years after Mark McGwire retired, his son is impressing in the minor leagues.
Mason McGwire, 22, is a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs’ Single-A affiliate and has had a strong start to the season on the mound.
In four games and 10 innings pitched for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the righty has notched an impressive 0.90 ERA with 15 strikeouts.
His latest, a scoreless four-inning start against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, earned him a shoutout from MLB’s official X account, which posted highlights from his performance.
“Mark McGwire’s son, Mason, is looking NASTY in the Cubs organization,” the post read.
Mason, 22, is now impressing in Single-A ball. Minor League Baseball Mason also had five strikeouts in the appearance, his first start of the season.
The Mission Vieja, California native was selected by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 2022 Amateur Draft.
He’s worked his way up since then, spending 2023 in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League before making the jump up to Single-A in 2024. Both campaigns were rocky ones.
He did not play last season due to injury but is back for the Pelicans and making an impact.
McGwire, 62, joined the Athletics in February as a player development assistant as he returned to his old organization.
Following his illustrious-yet-controversial playing career, which included 583 career home runs and being named in the 2007 Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, he had worked as a coach with the Cardinals, Dodgers and Padres.
