“As an officer with combat experience, I have decided to tender my resignation from my current post. I believe this is the right thing to do,” said the police general at a press conference in Kyiv on Sunday.

The attacker was shot dead by anti-terrorism units after barricading himself in a supermarket where he took hostages.

Video footage circulating online shows two officers fleeing the scene when gunfire erupted.

Authorities have classified the shooting as a terrorist attack and investigations, including into the motive of the 58-year-old gunman, are continuing.
