An internal review found that the Department of Justice under President Biden was "weaponized" against pro-life defendants. Photo by Sean Rayford/Getty Images In a saner world, the political weaponization of the Department of Justice under President Joe Biden would be a bipartisan scandal, but the “moderates” in today’s Democratic Party won’t lift a finger to protect traditional norms.
The latest horror story is this week’s report on flagrant abuses, including the withholding of evidence and “aggressive arrest tactics” when targeting pro-life defendants; the nearly 900-page review also shows Attorney General Merrick Garland’s prosecutors demanding far harsher prison sentences for pro-lifers than pro-choicers convicted on similar charges.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche rightly called it a “two-tiered system of justice” with “selective prosecution based on beliefs.”
Garland’s DOJ went after peaceful demonstrators outside abortion clinics even as it ignored serious violence against pro-life “crisis pregnancy” centers.
It even teamed up with pro-abortion groups to selectively prosecute anti-abortion activists, feeding the civilians inside intelligence and instructing them to keep dossiers that prosecutors then used to obtain search warrants and file criminal charges.
The feds can’t themselves legally spy on the travel and constitutionally protected activities of law-abiding citizens, so the Biden Justice Department effectively deputized its political allies as parapolice.
In one notorious case, 20 FBI agents stormed the home of a cooperative anti-abortion activist, pointing rifles at his wife and children as they arrested him.
Indeed, the Biden FBI repeatedly profiled traditional Catholics as “extremists” (relying on the discredited Southern Poverty Law Center for “evidence”) even as it failed to protect Supreme Court justices targeted by pro-choice intimidation as they were deciding the Dobbs case that overturned Roe v. Wade.
President Donald Trump later pardoned several pro-lifers targeted for excessive prosecution under Biden, and his administration is continuing to expose a far wider range of Garland-era abuses.
Justice is supposed to be blind; the feds’ duty is to protect all Americans equally, with no regard for their personal beliefs.
If Democrats can’t condemn this blatant weaponization of the Justice Department, then all their talk about “threats to democracy” is empty bluster — at best.
