Golf reporter Ryan French, who runs the popular Monday Q Info X account, said that a “bombshell announcement” was coming about LIV Golf.
“I have some pretty good sources and I’ve heard that some other people have sources that LIV is shutting down,” French later said on X Spaces, according to the FlushingItGolf account.
The Saudi-backed golf tour recruited some of the PGA’s biggest stars with astronomical guaranteed contracts, starting in 2022. Despite having the likes of Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Phil Mickelson, it has not led to a significant following — at least in comparison to the PGA Tour.
Brooks Koepka became the first top player to return to the PGA Tour after leaving for LIV, thanks to a one-time Returning Member Program.
A few top players were eligible for it, but only Koepka took advantage — though it came with a significant financial hit.
Patrick Reed is also working his way back to the PGA Tour from LIV as a past champion member, with him eligible to return in August.
Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee, who is perhaps LIV’s harshest critic, predicted French’s report would come to fruition.
“Given that the product was so ill-conceived and ended up being worse than anyone could have imagined,” Chamblee wrote on X in response to the news.
“With shotgun starts, initially 54 holes, a team concept that was nothing but laughable and tournaments that meant and continue to mean nothing, and such a paltry number of viewers, losing billions along the way – would it surprise anyone if the Saudis came to their senses and finally euthanized the whole lame-brained tour?”
LIV Golf is set to tee it up in Mexico this week and still has nine events left on its 2026 schedule.
“I’ve got everything from, and these are people that I trust, that you guys know,” French said on X Spaces.
“Players didn’t get paid today, power went out because the bill wasn’t paid, employees didn’t get paid. Stuff like that. There is definitely a lot going on… Things are not good.”
