Trump tells of letter exchange with Xi Jinping over China’s role in Iran war: interview

‘He just wrote me a beautiful letter. He responded to a letter that I wrote because I had heard that China is giving weapons to [Iran]’

1-MIN READ1-MIN ListenSCMP ReporterPublished: 6:33pm, 15 Apr 2026US President Donald Trump said he exchanged letters with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Beijing’s potential role in the Iran war, according to his interview with Fox Business aired on Wednesday.

“He is somebody I get along with very well. He just wrote me a beautiful letter. He responded to a letter that I wrote because I had heard that China is giving weapons to [Iran],” Trump said in an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.

Trump did not elaborate on when the letter exchange took place.

Beijing has denied reports that China was planning to provide weapons and military technology to Iran.

“In the export of military items, China has always adopted a prudent and responsible attitude, exercising strict control in accordance with its domestic export control laws and regulations, as well as international obligations,” Guo Jiakun, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said earlier this week.
