Passenger napping in car is killed when crook jumps in and crashes: police

A passenger napping in a car outside a Las Vegas Walmart was killed when a carjacker jumped in, raced off and then crashed it, according to police.

The unidentified man in his 30s was snoozing in the front passenger seat around 11 a.m. Sunday while a family member was when Harold Allen, 55, jumped in the unlocked, running vehicle, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Lt. Monique Rodriguez told reporters.

Allen floored the gas — slamming into a minivan in the parking lot, causing the car to “spin out” and hit a pole and boulder, Rodriguez said.

A man in his 30s was killed in the alleged kidnapping and crash, police said. WRAL “The man in the passenger seat woke up to another man essentially kidnapping him,” she said, calling it a “crime of opportunity.”

The passenger was rushed to a local hospital but could not be saved.

Allen — who has “an extensive criminal history” — suffered minor injuries, Rodriguez said.

The alleged kidnapper has an long criminal history. WRAL The driver of the silver minivan hit by the stolen car also suffered minor injuries, while his passenger in the van was not hurt, KLAS reported.

Allen was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on several felony charges, including open murder with a deadly weapon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and first-degree kidnapping.

The victim’s identity and his official cause of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
