A career criminal whose scrap with a disgraced Long Island police chief ended the cop’s career tried to get a jailhouse sit-down with Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann — a desperate bid to try to implicate the ex-cop in the grisly murders, The Post has learned.
Ex-junkie Christopher Loeb was viciously beaten by former Suffolk County Police Chief Jimmy Burke in 2012 after stealing the cop’s dildo and porn stash, sending the controversial cop to prison — and he said he remains convinced the former chief was somehow involved with Heuermann’s monstrous crimes.
“I have reason to believe this is a coverup to protect others,” Loeb said in a statement Sunday. “After I broke in Burke’s truck, the murders miraculously stopped. I didn’t break into Rex’s truck. I broke into Burke’s truck and he’s definitely involved.”
Burke has never been in any way implicated or identified as a suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders.
But Loeb, who is currently behind bars and has three open criminal cases on assault, strangulation and grand larceny charges, won’t let it go, insisting that “Burke is involved.”
Suffolk County Sheriff Erroll Toulon confirmed last week that Loeb did try to talk to Heuermann in jail.
“Christopher Loeb attempted to come and visit or communicate with [Heuermann],” Toulon said in an exclusive interview last week. “He’s the one with Jimmy Burke, the former chief of department, who former Chief Burke assaulted him and led to his downfall.
“He tried to communicate with him,” the veteran sheriff said. ” Yes. He wanted to try and visit him. He wanted to come and visit Rex Heuermann.”
Toulon, who said Heuermann declined the request, did not say why Loeb may have wanted to chat with the hulking serial killer, who admitted last week that he strangled and butchered eight sex workers between 1993 and 2010 before dumping the bodies.
Burke, a loose-cannon cop who botched the Gilgo Beach investigation for years, was once rumored as a potential suspect but was never officially named and was eventually cleared of any involvement.
His career came to an abrupt end after Loeb was arrested on Dec. 14, 2012, at his mother’s house in Smithtown, where cops allegedly found a stash of stolen property from several vehicles, including Burke’s.
According to court records,they “included his gun belt, magazines of ammunition, a box of cigars, a humidor and a canvas bag that contained other items, sex toys and adult pornography.”
Burke flew into a rage and pounded Loeb while he was handcuffed, and later forced cops under his command to lie about the incident — but the ruse didn’t stop him from getting busted.
Burke was never tied to the murders, but he was hit with federal civil rights charges as well as state charges and served more than two years in prison on assault and obstruction of justice convictions.
He was released in 2019 but busted again in 2023 for soliciting sex.
Meanwhile, Heuermann is scheduled to be sentenced to three life terms in prison without chance of parole on June 17 following his shocking guilty pleas last week.
The Massapequa Park killer has had other curious encounters while awaiting sentencing, including fan letters from other famous psychopaths, with “Happy Face Killer” Keith Jesperson reportedly among them.
