A new analysis of historical Powerball and Mega Millions jackpot data through 2025 found California to be one of the top states for lottery wins per capita.
The study, from Vegas Now, ranked California No. 4 nationwide for lotto luck, with the state’s large population keeping it from claiming a higher spot.
California logged a hefty 44 jackpot victories, according to the analysis, which found an average of 94.1 overall winners per year across Powerball and Mega Millions — translating to 24.2 wins per million residents.
The state has produced some jaw-dropping lottery lore, earning a handful of stores near-mythical reputations for selling winning tickets, The Los Angeles Times reported.
In Altadena, Joe’s Service Center sold the largest Powerball jackpot in history: a staggering $2.04 billion prize.
In Hawthorne, Bluebird Liquor has earned a reputation as Los Angeles County’s luckiest lotto hub. Since 2013, the shop has produced four tickets worth at least $1 million.
In Kern County, Midway Market & Liquors in the Frazier Park area made headlines for selling the second-largest Powerball prize ever in 2023.
Meanwhile, Village Spirit Shoppe in Westlake Village recently turned out a $50 million Super Lotto Plus winner, the biggest prize in the state so far this year, and its third multimillion-dollar ticket overall.
In Los Angeles, the Las Palmitas Mini Market stunned players when it sold a $1.04 billion Powerball-winning ticket in 2023.
Nationwide, Michigan topped the Vegas Now ranking, followed by Virginia and New York. Rounding out the top 10 are Maryland, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.
At the opposite end, Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana didn’t record a single jackpot win during the study period.
