Putting a roof on Citi Field a $1 billion venture at this point

Jon Heyman Putting a roof on Citi Field a $1 billion venture at this point By Jon Heyman Published April 9, 2026, 6:30 p.m. ET General view of Citi Field during batting practice before an opening day game between the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect The terrible weather made me think again about how Citi Field could use a roof, which I’ve suggested before. So I looked into it, and word is it’d be a billion dollars-plus to add one now.

They did it across the street for the U.S. Open, but there’s much more area to cover for a baseball field.

The time to do it was at the time of construction. The Wilpons struggled building consistent winners, but as real estate people, they hit a home run with magnificent Citi Field.

The one negative is they should have included a retractable roof, which was then (at construction time) only around $120 million-$150M extra.
