Blakeman and Hochul’s heated debate: Letters to the Editor — Oct. 17, 2026

Make New York Post a Preferred Source New York Democratic gubernatorial candidate, current Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman face off in the only scheduled debate ahead of the November New York gubernatorial election at the Spectrum News NY1 studios, Oct. 13, 2026, in New York. Getty Images The Issue: Gov. Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman’s gubernatorial debate.

In my opinion, Bruce Blakeman won the debate (“Kat’s dogged by Blake bites,” Oct. 14).

But one question kept coming to mind: Did I miss something?

Is President Trump running for governor of New York?

Listening to Gov. Hochul, you might have thought he was standing at the other podium.

New Yorkers deserve answers about the cost of living, taxes, public safety and whether their children can afford to build a future here.

Tell us why another term would produce better results.

Hochul’s rebuttal to every debate topic was to align Blakeman with Trump.

Her inability to honestly defend her record on spending and sanctuary policies was untenable.

Any reasonable person would agree that Hochul’s tenure as governor has been a failure, as was her debate performance.

All through the debate, Gov. Hochul began her each response with the same word: Trump. She sounded like a child.

Blakeman destroyed her with facts and common sense.

It’s time to stop voting the same way year after year and hoping for a different result.

Yes, Blakeman took down Hochul on the debate stage, exposing what a fraud and shyster she is.

New Yorkers will always be blinded by stupid political choices and a patronage that never benefits them.

Also, congrats to Saritha Komatireddy on her debate.

Blakeman responded to Hochul’s Trump attacks by pointing out her failures and citing the whopping $8 billion spent on illegal migrants and her runaway Medicaid expenditures.

She had no answers for the families murdered by illegals, and had even less to say about her ties to Cornell.

The Issue: President Trump suspending US sanctions on Russian diesel exports to combat rising gas costs.

President Trump’s deal to buy diesel from Russia is hypocritical (“Russ. fuel by elex day,” Oct. 15).

He previously slapped India with a 50% tariff for buying Russian oil.

He criticized Europe for the same during his UN speech in 2025.

This is a desperate attempt to reduce gas prices before the midterm elections.

It also fits Trump’s long-standing pattern of serving the interests of Vladimir Putin at the expense of the United States.

Volodymyr Zelensky has every right to be concerned about Trump’s diesel deal with Putin.

Someone should remind Trump that Putin invaded Ukraine and the ongoing war was going to end with his intervention.

It’s obvious Trump is keeping his enemies closer.

The midterms will reveal the displeasure with Republicans and a president friendly with foes.

How are we supposed to accept Trump’s purchase of enormous amounts of diesel from the murderous Putin who terrorizes and kills innocent Ukrainians?

How is Trump honoring the legacy of Lindsey Graham if he supplies vast amounts of money to Russia?

Are the lives of millions of people not worth the increased price of diesel in America?
