Broadcom (AVGO) fell 3% and Marvell (MRVL) dropped 4% after Hock Tan warned capital shortages could become AI's next binding constraint.
NVIDIA's general-purpose accelerators serve far more customers than AVGO or MRVL, limiting its exposure if large cloud buyers cut AI spending.
Multi-year custom chip contracts support Broadcom's bull case, but a capital crunch at concentrated cloud customers could push expected revenue into future years.

A blunt warning about AI funding from one of the chip industry's most prominent executives is hitting custom AI chip stocks harder than the wider semiconductor group. Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) stock has dropped 4%, recently trading at $332.10. Meanwhile, Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL) stock is also down 4% and trades at $231.12.
Shares of Broadcom and Marvell are trailing the funds that track their corners of the market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) is down 2.7%, a softer decline than either Broadcom stock or Marvell stock. Large-cap tech is holding up better (though it's still selling off), with the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) down 2.3%.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan spoke at an event in Singapore. Earlier this week, he stated that investors "set very extreme expectations only to find out that it's almost like they are in a casino." Tan also warned that a shortage of capital could overtake chips and memory as the AI industry's next constraint. That second remark carries the most weight for Broadcom stock and Marvell stock, because it points at the money behind AI data centers.

Broadcom and Marvell design custom AI chips for a small number of large cloud customers under multi-year programs. That structure gives Broadcom and Marvell long visibility into demand, and it also ties each to a short list of buyers, so even one of those customers pulling back on funding could hurt Broadcom and Marvell more than it would a supplier with a wider customer base.
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) makes general-purpose AI accelerators that run across a wide range of customers and workloads. Its approach contrasts with the custom programs at Broadcom and Marvell, where each chip is designed around one buyer's specific needs.
The Invesco QQQ Trust counts Broadcom, Marvell and NVIDIA among its holdings, alongside a much wider mix of large-cap names outside the chip industry. Such a spread makes the Invesco QQQ Trust a broader gauge of large-cap tech than the iShares Semiconductor ETF, and memory, equipment and software names in the fund respond to different drivers than custom chip designers like Broadcom and Marvell do.
The bullish argument for Broadcom depends on custom chip programs that customers sign years in advance. Those commitments give Broadcom a revenue path that one conference remark doesn't change. Custom designs also take years to develop, which raises the cost for any customer that wants to replace Broadcom with another supplier.
On the bear side, the risk for Broadcom is that the capital shortage Tan described reaches the customers paying for those chips. Large cloud buyers facing reduced funding could stretch out deployment schedules, and a concentrated customer list leaves Broadcom with fewer ways to offset that. Even a modest delay could push revenue Broadcom expected in one year into the next.
Tan's warning moves the AI chip debate from hardware supply to customer funding. Broadcom and Marvell now face the question of whether their large cloud customers keep financing AI buildouts at the pace those multi-year programs assume. Any sign that cloud buyers are cutting spending plans could pressure Broadcom stock and Marvell stock again.
Both stocks are falling harder than both funds. That is a sign the market is treating the capital warning as a specific risk for custom chip designers. For investors who share the bull case, a moderate position size makes sense, given the uncertainty Tan raised.
