Mercedes-Benz (MBGAF) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) are expanding their work on automated vehicles, with the latest phase bringing together onboard computing, AI-driven driving decisions and additional safety protections as they pursue more advanced driving capabilities.

A key objective is to prepare for SAE Level 4 applications, in which vehicles can operate autonomously within defined conditions. The companies identified robolimousines as a potential application, but did not provide a timetable for deployment.

The development will draw on several technologies. Mercedes-Benz's MB.OS supports vehicle functions and remote software updates, while Nvidia's Hyperion provides the computing and sensor framework. Nvidia's Alpamayo Stack is designed to help vehicles interpret driving situations and make decisions using AI reasoning.

The partnership also incorporates Nvidia Halos, which adds a separate safety layer intended to provide backup protections. Planned capabilities include navigating urban routes between destinations, automated parking and active safety functions.

For Mercedes-Benz, the extended collaboration could help bring more driving features into its software platform. Nvidia gains a continued role in the automaker's automated-driving development. Neither company provided additional commercial terms or a launch schedule in the supplied announcement.
