Tesla (TSLA:NASDAQ) unveiled a redesigned Roadster on Thursday, built with SpaceX and featuring rocket-style thrusters. Production is set to begin in 2028, more than a decade after Tesla first showed a next-generation version. Tesla stock was up about 5% in premarket trading on Friday.

The launch event was a show, where the car drove upside down on a ramp using suction, then turned in the air and landed on its thrusters. Later it jumped over a truck.

That range is less than half of what Musk promised in 2017. Tesla quoted a $200,000 base price nearly a decade ago but did not confirm any price-related information during the event.

The reservation page shows a "Performance" version with a $50,000 deposit and a "Thrust" version with a $250,000 deposit. A "Rocket" version is invite-only.

Investors seem to like the show, but the car itself is not the main story for Tesla stock. Musk once called the Roadster a "small potato situation" that would not move the needle financially.

Analysts see it as a halo car. Morningstar's Seth Goldstein said Tesla doesn't have one today, while others see a link to a possible Tesla-SpaceX merger.

Gene Munster called it an "engineering flex" with no commercial value.

The bigger drivers for Tesla stock are in its quarterly results.

Tesla reported record Q2 deliveries, while automotive gross margin, excluding credits, fell from 19.2% to 16.3%.

Free cash flow was negative, as capital spending more than doubled from the prior quarter.

Management expects capital spending above $25 billion this year, as the EV maker builds out robotaxi, Optimus, and chip plants.

It also said about 55% of North American deliveries had an FSD subscription.

Analysts say margins and cash flow will matter more than the Roadster. Those come on October 21. Until then, Tesla stock is trading on excitement and merger talk.
