Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) unveiled a redesigned Roadster with rocket-style thrusters and said production would start in 2028. That's more than a decade after Tesla first showed a next-generation version of the car. Shares rose 5.25% in premarket.

The two-seater, developed with SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX), used built-in thrusters to jump over a line of Tesla vehicles at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas. Tesla vehicle engineering chief Lars Moravy said it can reach 60 mph in under one second and top 230 mph. Its range of more than 300 miles is less than half what Musk promised in 2017. Tesla gave no target prices, but its reservation page lists a $50,000 deposit for a Performance version and $250,000 for a Thrust version with acceleration thrusters.

Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management called the car an engineering flex with no commercial value beyond embarrassing traditional car makers. He also said the event showed why Musk wants to combine Tesla and SpaceX. Musk himself said in 2023 that the Roadster wouldn't move the needle financially.

The bigger test comes on October 21, when Tesla reports third-quarter results. The company has shifted toward self-driving and robotics, ending Model S and X sales this year to make room for Optimus robot production.
