Tesla Inc. (TSLA, Financials), the electric-vehicle company, delivered investors what they've been waiting nearly nine years to see: a new version of the Roadster.Tesla introduced the new sports vehicle Thursday, which has thrusters meant to allow for brief flights. Shares were up 4.5% in premarket trade Friday. The announcement converts years of conjecture into something a little more tangible, but the date still matters.Tesla originally revealed the next-generation Roadster in 2017, and the project has been repeatedly delayed since then. The corporation is now aiming for production in 2028.That means the Roadster is more of a future product, than a near-term earnings contributor. But the event counts because it provides Tesla another avenue to cement its reputation as a corporation ready to explore beyond the bounds of traditional car design. The SpaceX link is also an attractive element. A thruster on a road car is a far better marketing hook than a typical performance improvement. The big concern for investors is whether Tesla can translate that excitement into a product that really gets to customers on time. What to monitor next will be if the corporation will give more concrete production parameters and price as the 2028 goal date approaches.
