Embattled lefty SF supervisor Jackie Fielder wants 3 months off after ‘mental health’ crisis, questions swirl over taxpayer-funded leave

Embattled San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder is asking for a stunning three months away from City Hall, a disappearance that would sideline the progressive lawmaker through the city’s most high-stakes budget fight.

The Post first reported that Fielder formally requested to skip all Board of Supervisors meetings after what her office described as an “acute personal health crisis” that led to her hospitalization.

Now, new information released Tuesday shows she is seeking to extend that leave through June 30, dramatically lengthening her absence.

The timeline is already raising eyebrows. By the time her hospitalization became public in late March, Fielder had already missed roughly two weeks of meetings.

Fielder earns about $175,370 a year, or roughly $14,600 a month. If she stays out through June, that’s nearly three months off the job, about $40,000 to $45,000 in taxpayer-funded pay.

Fielder’s office has come under scrutiny amid an ongoing investigation into the leak of a confidential city memo tied to a controversial “sobering center” proposal, a breach that triggered warnings of serious consequences at the highest levels of City Hall.

City Attorney David Chiu warned lawmakers the leak could carry “serious ramifications,” including discipline, fines, or even removal from office for an elected official.

A spokesperson for the city attorney confirmed an investigation is underway into the unlawful disclosure of privileged legal information but declined to say whether any supervisor or office is a target.

Fielder’s office has denied any involvement, and no findings have been made public.

The leak itself exposed internal legal concerns that Mayor Daniel Lurie’s proposed “RESET Center” could violate state law and carry “very high legal risk.” The Board of Supervisors ultimately approved the plan in a 9-2 vote, with Fielder among those who opposed it.

In the days and weeks surrounding the controversy, Fielder stopped appearing at City Hall.

At one point, she reportedly indicated she planned to resign after being hospitalized, before later saying she would wait and decide after recovering.

It remains unclear whether the investigation played any role in the events leading up to her hospitalization.

Her extended leave lands squarely in the middle of San Francisco’s budget season, when billions in taxpayer dollars are negotiated before a final vote expected in July.

Mayor Daniel Lurie is set to release a proposed budget by June 1, kicking off weeks of negotiations typically led by the full Board.

Fielder’s request, submitted to Board President Rafael Mandelman, still requires approval and must technically be granted meeting by meeting. Mandelman has signaled support, saying it is “appropriate” for her to take time to recover and noting she may not need the full duration.

Her office says staff will continue handling constituent services during her absence.

But inside City Hall, the impact is already taking shape.

Committee assignments, including the government oversight panel she chairs, are expected to shift temporarily.
