In a social media post, Trump said the suspension of military action was “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz”.
He added that Washington had received “a 10-point proposal from Iran” and believed it could serve as “a workable basis on which to negotiate”.
“Almost all the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalised and consummated,” he said.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been spearheading last-minute mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran, had asked Trump to extend today’s deadline by two weeks.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said earlier on Tuesday afternoon that Trump “has been made aware of the proposal” and that “a response will come”.
Iranian authorities were also reviewing the request as the deadline rapidly approached, Reuters reported, citing a senior Iranian official.
