A horrific house fire has revealed a two-year-old boy, who died in the blaze, was allegedly being tortured by his uncle.
The agricultural city of Turlock, about 300 miles northwest of LA, is in turmoil after the toddler was found in what cops are calling a twisted arson case.
The boy’s uncle, Richard Regalado, 29, appeared in Stanislaus County Superior Court on Friday for his arraignment, facing multiple felony charges, including murder, arson and torture.
“It’s been probably one of the most horrible cases in this county we’ve had in a long time, just in nature,” Stanislaus County prosecutor Vita Palazuelos said.
“Our heart goes out to the victim’s family, and I just ask that the public give them privacy and space to grieve.”
The prosecutor added this is the most disturbing case they’ve seen.
Investigators allege Regalado deliberately set a house on fire Wednesday morning on Expedition Street while babysitting his young nephew, who was later found dead inside.
“The family is going through a lot. And those questions will be answered eventually in the court process as we move forward,” Palazuelos said.
Neighbors said they are struggling to process the tragedy, describing their typically peaceful, low-key street as shaken by grief and disbelief.
Authorities added the case marks the second serious child torture investigation in Stanislaus County within the past week, raising alarm across the community.
Regalado is being held without bail and is expected to return to court in May. A GoFundMe has been organized to help the boy’s family.
