Intel Corp. (INTC, Financials) is the chipmaker that is seeking to restore its dominance in data centers, and it has finally given investors something practical to work with stronger growth and considerably better profitability.Second-quarter revenue surged 25.4% to $16.13 billion, exceeding the $14.45 billion expected. Adjusted profits of 42 cents per share also above forecasts. The largest change was in Data Center and AI, where revenue was up 59 per cent. The operating margin climbed to 17%, from a 4% loss, indicating the turnaround is becoming more than a narrative about cost cutting.Investors are noticing. Intel shares have up nearly 175% year-to-date, albeit they've down around 13% in the last week. The external validation has too. Nvidia put $5 billion into Intel, SoftBank put in $2 billion, and Nvidia has picked Intel's Xeon 6 CPU to power its DGX Rubin NVL8 system. That's promising, but it also sets the standard higher.Intel now has to prove that the growing data-center demand and rising margins can hold up after such a big surge. The next test is if the upcoming earnings show sufficient growth to warrant the amount of confidence currently baked into the stock.
