The software and cloud-computing behemoth, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT, Financials) is suffering the same old dilemma in its fastest-growing business: Revenue is soaring but so are the expenditures to maintain that growth.Girish Bablani, president of Azure, has allegedly ordered top management to find methods to slash expenses by at least 20%.Microsoft rejected the characterization, stating Azure leadership had not instructed workers to establish formal cost-cutting strategies and that the business frequently prepared for many eventualities. The debate important, though.Azure produced $101.9 billion in revenue in the 12 months ending in June, a 40% increase from a year before. Revenue increased 43% in the June quarter, accounting for nearly 31% of Microsoft's overall revenue. The question is what does it cost to keep up that pace?Microsoft is also vying with businesses such as Meta and Anthropic for limited technical expertise, while AI infrastructure expenditure is rapidly expanding. They might save costs by hiring fewer outside contractors and by deploying AI to make their employees more productive.Azure employs over 60,000 people whereas Bablani's organization has about 11,500. For investors the question is no longer if Azure can grow. It's whether Microsoft can maintain that growth profitably as AI gets more capital heavy.Next, investors will want to see whether the announced efficiency drive leads to actual budget reduction, personnel changes or improved Azure margins.
