Concerns about growing competition from China's ChangXin Memory Technologies and uncertainty over returns from artificial intelligence investments weighed on sentiment. Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) Chief Executive Hock Tan had compared some investment flows into the sector to casino gambling, adding to concerns about elevated valuations and speculative spending.

Investors were also assessing mixed third-quarter results from major U.S. banks at the start of the earnings season.

Citigroup (NYSE:C) fell 5.6% despite beating profit expectations, while Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) slipped 0.2%.

Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) dropped 3.1% after its net interest income missed estimates, and JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) declined 0.9% after reporting a rare quarterly profit shortfall.

The focus now shifts to Wednesday's consumer price index report, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's next policy moves. Economists expect the September data to provide a clearer picture of inflation pressures as higher energy costs and geopolitical tensions complicate the outlook.

Oil prices, government bond yields and developments in the Middle East remain key drivers of market sentiment. Brent prices rose in Asian trading Wednesday to near $107 per barrel.

Elevated crude prices have raised concerns that inflation could prove persistent, potentially limiting the central bank's scope to ease monetary policy. Traders widely expect the Fed to hold interest rates steady this month, although a rate increase in December remains a possibility.
