Marvell has surged 214% in 2026 while Broadcom has gained just 3%, after raising its custom AI silicon forecast to tens of billions in revenue.
NVIDIA is up 22% and SOXX up 79% in 2026, but Marvell's concentrated customer base means one lost design win could sharply reverse those gains.

One custom chip designer has more than doubled in value this year so far. Shares of Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL) are trading at $266.27, up 214% year to date.
Chip stocks more broadly have also climbed, though at a slower pace. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX), which counts Marvell among its holdings, is up 79% year to date. Tech's wider benchmark, the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ), is up 21% year to date.
Meanwhile, shares of Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO), the larger custom silicon rival, are at $356.16, up 3% year to date, a fraction of Marvell stock's advance. NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock is at $227.18, up 22% year to date, also far short of the custom chip designer's pace.
Marvell held its investor day in early October and used it to press the case for its custom artificial intelligence (AI) silicon business. That unit designs application-specific chips for individual hyperscale customers, with each part built around one buyer's workloads. In the same week, Marvell raised its forecast for the custom business and set out a long-range revenue ambition reaching into the tens of billions of dollars.
At an industry hardware summit in October, Marvell also showed a new high-capacity data center switch. The switch extends the company's reach in networking and connectivity, the components that link AI chips together inside a cluster.

Marvell builds custom silicon along with data center networking and connectivity components for a small number of very large customers, and a single design win can carry years of revenue while losing one has the same weight in reverse. This structure helps explain why Marvell stock can swing harder than the broader chip group when its customer pipeline shifts.
Broadcom runs the same custom accelerator model at far greater scale and pairs it with a large enterprise software business, while NVIDIA, for its part, sells general-purpose graphics processors into the merchant market, where many customers buy the same part.
Supporters could argue that custom accelerator demand is contracted years ahead and that Marvell has only recently been credited for it. Hyperscale buyers commit to a design long before volume production begins, so visibility in this model can stretch well past an ordinary chip cycle.
A run of this magnitude prices in execution Marvell hasn't yet delivered, the skeptics argue. Customer concentration sharpens that risk, since one lost socket could undo a great deal of the gain.
Marvell's unresolved question is whether the custom silicon revenue it has guided toward arrives on the schedule its valuation now assumes. Shareholders can watch for whether program ramps tied to the raised custom forecast begin to show up in the company's upcoming reports. Orders for the new data center switch could also indicate how quickly the networking side turns product launches into revenue.
A rally this steep can reverse quickly. This could happen if a concentrated customer base changes its plans, and the traits that showed up years before the biggest tech runs are the ones we cataloged in a free guide here: The Next NVIDIA Playbook. Investors should size their MRVL share positions so that a single lost design win wouldn't ruin their portfolio. Those weighing whether to take profits may want to keep an eye on whether Broadcom and NVIDIA shares begin to narrow the gap with Marvell stock.
