Coinbase Global (COIN) stock has lost 53% over the past twelve months, while the S&P 500 returned 17.3%. The business shrank as well. Revenue in the second quarter of 2026 was 18.5% lower than a year earlier. Investors may be hoping the worst is behind the company, but nothing guarantees that. So is there any sign that the revenue slide is ending? Not in the guidance management gave with its second-quarter results.
Coinbase Guided To Lower Third-Quarter Subscription Revenue
Not in what company executives have told investors so far. When releasing its second-quarter results on July 30, 2026, Coinbase guided to about $540 million of subscription and services revenue for the third quarter. It had reported $555 million on that line for the second quarter, indicating management expects a slight contraction. Subscription and services brought in roughly half of Coinbase's revenue in the second quarter.
During the July 30 call, analysts also asked whether growth in Coinbase One, the paid membership program, meant the company was earning less on each trade. Management replied that members are worth more to Coinbase on average, but noted that revenue will shift from one line of its results to another.
How Much Would Coinbase Lose If Second-Quarter Losses Continued?
If the company were to repeat its second-quarter performance for a full year, Coinbase would lose about $1.4 billion. Most of that came from items outside its day-to-day operations, which ran close to break-even in the quarter. That figure simply takes the second quarter's net loss and multiplies it by four. While it is not a forecast, it illustrates what a year would look like if that quarter repeated. Coinbase lost $1.0 billion over the last twelve months, so a year resembling the second quarter would be worse than the one just ended.
Revenue on the same annualized basis would be $4.9 billion, compared with $6.3 billion over the last twelve months. Coinbase still made a profit from its operations over the last twelve months, despite the net loss. Its operating margin, however, narrowed to 11.7% from 27% a year earlier.
Coinbase stock has fallen harder than the broader market during bad stretches before. In the 2022 inflation shock, for example, it fell 81%, against 24% for the S&P 500.
Coinbase's Cash Is More Than Six Times That Loss
Coinbase holds $9.0 billion in cash and short-term investments, which is more than six times a yearly loss of that size. The company also owes $6.7 billion in debt. Repaying all of it would leave $2.3 billion, an amount still larger than a year of such losses.
Furthermore, the net loss does not mean cash is actually leaving the business. Coinbase's operations brought in $1.7 billion of cash over the last twelve months, even though the company reported a net loss for the period.
Management has also trimmed its spending plan. On July 30, it lowered its 2026 adjusted expense guide to about $4.33 billion from $4.42 billion.
Newer products may help too. Management stated on the same call that it is seeing good adoption of prediction markets and perpetual futures. It said it has early signals that customers using new products such as prediction markets are also adding to spot trading volume. Additionally, on September 28, 2026, the WSJ reported that Coinbase will help Citi's corporate clients make payments with stablecoins.
So a longer slide looks like a test of patience for Coinbase holders, not a threat to the company's survival. Two of management's third-quarter guides stand out: adjusted expenses of about $1.03 billion, and subscription and services revenue of about $540 million. That revenue number is the one to watch when Coinbase reports its third quarter.

There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
