Microsoft Corp. (MSFT, Financials), the software and cloud-computing company, is preparing a major expansion of its in-house AI hardware as it looks for a cheaper way to power increasingly expensive AI workloads.

The company plans to deploy potentially more than 1 million Maia 300 chips next year across its internal AI services and Azure infrastructure.

That scale makes the strategy much more important than a typical custom-chip launch.

Microsoft says Maia 300 can deliver about 40% more useful computing per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems, though it did not identify the specific systems used for comparison.

The chips will be installed in racks containing 96 processors and drawing about 167 kilowatts of power. For Microsoft, the attraction is straightforward.

AI infrastructure is becoming one of its largest expenses, with capital spending expected to exceed $175 billion this year. Building more of its own silicon could help lower costs, improve power efficiency and reduce reliance on Nvidia hardware.

Maia 300 also uses a chiplet design built partly on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s 2-nanometer technology, while other parts use less expensive 3-nanometer manufacturing.

The bigger question is whether Microsoft can achieve Nvidia-like performance and software reliability at massive scale.

The next catalyst will be the start of Microsoft's planned multi-gigawatt Maia 300 deployments next year and whether those systems materially improve Azure's AI economics.
