AI server producer Super Micro Computer Inc. (SMCI, Financials) slid nearly 5.5% after a former contractor pled guilty in a federal lawsuit involving suspected illicit transfers of restricted artificial-intelligence technology to China. The article said Ting-Wei Sun pled guilty to four counts, including conspiracy to violate export regulations, smuggling, fraud against the United States and obstruction of justice. The conspiracy, which prosecutors said began in October 2023, involves the illegal shipment of about $2.5 billion worth of US AI servers to China without the requisite permits. The indictment names servers manufactured using Nvidia's B200, H100 and H200 CPUs.Yih-Shyan Liaw, a co-founder of Super Micro, was also accused in the case and has pled not guilty, the article said. The worries of investors go beyond the immediate decline in the stock.Super Micro is in the midst of the AI infrastructure buildout, but that location also puts it under more scrutiny as U.S. officials tighten limits on shipments of sophisticated chips to China. The corporation is also currently working through a $7 billion equity offering, giving shareholders another subject to chew on.The next catalyst is if the matter moves further and if Super Micro discloses any further compliance or legal or operational effect from the probe.
