Over the last ten years, an initial $10,000 investment in Alphabet (GOOGL) grew into about $87,100 before dividends. That same capital in the S&P 500 reached about $36,500. In hindsight, buying the company behind Google looks like an effortless trade. The reality of holding the position was far less comfortable. How many times do you think Alphabet stock fell 20% or more along the way?
How Often Did Alphabet Stock Fall?
Shareholders endured seven such declines over the past ten years. Two of those drops exceeded 30%. The table below details the severity of each pullback and the time required for the shares to recover.
The most severe decline started in November 2021 and hit its lowest point a year later. Alphabet lost 44.3% in that time, compared to a 20.9% drop for the S&P 500. Investors then waited about 15 more months for the stock to close above its previous high in January 2024.
What Was It Like Holding Alphabet Through A Fall?
Investors remain caught in the most recent decline. Alphabet recorded a closing high on May 13, 2026, and fell 21.1% by July 23. This contraction unfolded in a little over two months, during a period when the S&P 500 barely moved. The shares have not closed above that May peak since.
Every one of the six prior declines eventually ended. A shareholder in the middle of those drops had no way to guarantee a recovery, and the timeline for the current contraction remains unknown.
Was Something Wrong With Alphabet's Business?
Alphabet maintained sales growth through both the deepest fall and the 2026 contraction. The company sells advertising on Google Search and YouTube, and it provides computing services to companies through Google Cloud.
During the deepest fall, Alphabet recorded sales over twelve months that were 17.9% higher at the stock's low than at its prior high. The operating margin slipped from 30.3% to 27.8%, meaning the company kept slightly less of each dollar it took in.
In the 2026 fall, sales over twelve months were 5.5% higher at the low compared to the high. The operating margin edged up from 32.7% to 33.1%. Drops of this magnitude represent the inherent risk of holding Alphabet stock, even while the underlying business grows.
What Selling Alphabet Stock Would Have Cost
Alphabet stock is up 323% since its November 2022 low. An investor who sold at the bottom missed all of it. Today the stock trades 12.4% below its May high, and current holders are waiting again.
Deciding to buy Alphabet ten years ago was never the critical test. The real challenge lay in holding the position. The seven falls functioned as the price of admission for long-term gains, and only those who sat through the volatility collected the returns. When Alphabet stock falls hard in the future, investors should check whether corporate sales are falling in tandem. They did not decline during the deepest fall or the contraction in 2026.
Now you know GOOGL better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.
There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
