The third quarter earnings season kicked off in earnest on Tuesday with the major Wall Street banks, including JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Citigroup (C) opening their books.
Additional financial firms, including Bank of America (BAC), Morgan Stanley (MS), and BlackRock (BLK), report on Wednesday.
Investors are gearing up for another quarter of strong earnings, which has propelled the stock market to all-time highs. Wall Street estimates that the S&P 500 earnings growth rate will be 29.6%, according to FactSet data. If that rate holds, it would mark the third straight quarter of earnings growth above 25%.
Later in the week, investors look forward to a broader set of earnings results from companies such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), UnitedHealth (UNH), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM), and ASML (ASML).

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) reported another quarter of rising profits on Tuesday even as revenues from some of its biggest Wall Street businesses retreated after a standout second quarter.
The nation's largest bank said profits rose 6% from the third quarter a year ago to $15.3 billion, or $5.57 per share, falling short of the $5.90 per share that analysts forecast. Net revenue rose 8% to $50.2 billion compared to $46.4 billion in the third quarter of last year.
Excluding $658 million in paper securities losses, the bank earned $5.75 per share.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that "large fiscal deficits, sticky inflation, elevated asset prices, rising interest rates and geopolitical conditions continue to shift under the surface" despite the US economy's strength powered by strong business investment and a consumer that keeps spending.
"These forces may be manageable, but we remain prepared for a wide range of outcomes," Dimon said.
Several other major corporations reported quarterly results on Tuesday morning, alongside JPMorgan Chase (JPM) (see blog below). Here's what we've heard so far:
Goldman Sachs (GS): Profits surged 29% as its Wall Street trading and dealmaking businesses continued to deliver solid results. The stock popped over 4% in premarket trading.
Wells Fargo (WFC): Reported better-than-expected earnings. The consumer bank's credit loss provisions and net charge-offs were also better than expected as CEO Charles Scharf said, "consumer and business customers are doing well."
UnitedHealth Group (UNH): Raised its 2026 profit forecast and reported improved margins in its Optum clinical care unit. The stock is up 3%.
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ): Beat earnings estimates and raised its full-year guidance, but the stock was down on weaker-than-expected sales in its medical device business. Pharamaceutical sales remained strong, however.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) stock fell in premarket trading as investors homed in on the company's weaker-than-expected medical device sales, despite it raising its full-year guidance.

Q3 adjusted earnings per share: $2.59, above estimates of $2.53
Q3 revenue: $25.4 billion, above estimates of $25.38 billion
2026 full-year earnings per share guidance: raised to $11.05-$11.15, with a midpoint slightly above estimates of $11.08.
J&J's pharmaceutical business shone during the quarter, offsetting weakness in its medical device business. Here's a breakdown of J&J's business units:

On an adjusted basis, UnitedHealth earned $4.69 per share in the third quarter, up from $2.92 a year earlier, compared with an average analyst estimate of $4.14, according to data compiled by LSEG.
UnitedHealth now expects 2026 adjusted profit per share of at least $20.50 compared with its previous forecast of at least $19.50 to $20.
Analysts expected UnitedHealth, which operates one of the largest US health insurance companies, clinical care businesses, pharmacy services and a pharmacy benefits manager, to post profit of $19.86 per share for 2026, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Wells Fargo & Co. reported third-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street estimates as consumers and businesses held steady, keeping loan losses in check.
Provision for credit losses totaled $1 billion and net charge-offs, loans the bank deems uncollectible, were $983 million, San Francisco-based Wells Fargo said Tuesday in a statement. Both figures were better than the average estimates of analysts in a Bloomberg survey.
"While economic uncertainty exists and consumer sentiment remains mixed, our data shows that our consumer and business customers are doing well," Chief Executive Officer Charlie Scharf said in the statement. "Consumers are spending more, loan delinquencies are low, and deposit and investment balances have grown. Businesses continue to have strong balance sheets and losses remain low."
Net income for the quarter rose 6.5% to $5.95 billion, or $1.87 a share, according to the statement. Analysts expected adjusted earnings per share of $1.84. Revenue climbed 2% to $21.9 billion.
Goldman Sachs stock rose in premarket trading after the bank's earnings per share beat Wall Street analysts' expectations. Yahoo Finance's David Hollerith breaks down the numbers:
Goldman Sachs (GS) said Tuesday that third quarter profits rose 29% from a year earlier as its Wall Street trading and dealmaking businesses continued to deliver solid results despite cooling from a record second quarter.
The bank reported $5.29 billion in net earnings, or $17.01 per share, far exceeding the $13.50 per share forecast by analysts.
Total net revenue increased 23% to $18.68 billion while analysts expected $16.4 billion.
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon described the bank's third-quarter backdrop as "a complicated operating environment" in a statement accompanying the earnings release.
"Notwithstanding the current complexity and uncertainty in the world, we remain very well positioned to continue to deliver for our clients," Solomon said.
