For the first nearly eight months of 2026, Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) and BioNTech SE (NASDAQ: BNTX) had similar market caps. The two stocks exchanged the edge multiple times as the bigger messenger RNA (mRNA) therapy developer.
It's a different story today, though. Moderna's market cap hovers near $90 billion, around 3.6 times BioNTech's market cap of under $25 billion. Which biotech stock is the smarter pick now?
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Why has Moderna's share price skyrocketed more than 660% year to date, while BioNTech is barely in positive territory? The companies' pipelines have two diverging stories.
Moderna's surge is due to the impressive results from a late-stage study evaluating its personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, in combination with Merck's (NYSE: MRK) Keytruda in treating melanoma. This Phase 3 study single-handedly changed the narrative about Moderna, shifting it from struggling in a post-COVID world to pioneering an exciting new cancer platform.
BioNTech's mRNA cancer program, on the other hand, hasn't enjoyed such success. In August, the company announced that it was halting a Phase 2 clinical study of autogene cevumeran for the treatment of colorectal cancer. Safety wasn't the problem; the experimental cancer vaccine simply proved ineffective.
It didn't help matters that two of BioNTech's founders, the husband-and-wife team of Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci, plan to leave BioNTech to found a new company by the end of 2026. Although BioNTech is backing this new venture, the departure of Şahin and Türeci created uncertainty.
As you might expect, the valuation metrics of these two biotech innovators have also diverged. Moderna's shares now trade at over 32 times sales, with anticipation of future growth from its cancer vaccine inflating the price of its stock. BioNTech's price-to-sales ratio is a much lower 8x, almost value stock territory by comparison.
Which of these biotech stocks is the better pick now? Wall Street thinks there's a clear winner -- and it isn't Moderna.
Of the 15 analysts who have rated BioNTech over the past three months, 11 recommended buying the stock. The other four rated BioNTech as a "hold." The consensus 12-month price target for the stock reflects a potential upside of roughly 30%.
There's a much different story for Moderna. Only three of the 20 analysts who have rated the stock over the past three months recommend buying it. The average price target is a whopping 52.5% below Moderna's share price as of the market close on Oct. 9, 2026.
I agree with Wall Street that BioNTech is the smarter pick at current valuations. Moderna's gains price in a future that hasn't yet arrived. BioNTech's pipeline and strong cash position (roughly $18.6 billion at the end of Q2) give it a more attractive risk-reward proposition.
