S&P 500 Futures inched 0.2% lower to 7,840.0 points, while Nasdaq 100 Futures fell 0.8% to 30,646.50 points by 23:12 ET (03:12 GMT). Dow Jones Futures edged up 0.2% to 52,187.0 points.

The cautious mood followed a mixed session on Monday, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4%, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.5%.

Technology stocks, particularly chipmakers, came under pressure as investors reduced exposure to growth-oriented shares ahead of earnings announcements and inflation readings.

In Asian trading Tuesday, South Korea's KOSPI slid more than 7%, with Samsung Electronics (KS:005930) and SK Hynix (KS:000660) dropping over 8% each.

The losses followed news that Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) (SS:688825) had made progress on a next-generation DRAM design known as 4F², which could increase memory density.

CXMT is also targeting the launch of server DDR5 memory products using the technology by the end of 2026, intensifying concerns over future competition and pricing pressure.

Most U.S. memory chipmakers traded lower in extended trading.

Investors will focus on results from JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), Citigroup (NYSE:C) and Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) on Tuesday, marking the start of a closely watched reporting period for the U.S. banking sector.

UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) are also among the companies scheduled to report.

Bank earnings will be scrutinised for signs of resilience in lending, investment banking and consumer credit, as well as management commentary on the outlook for economic growth. Investors will also assess whether strong corporate profits can justify elevated stock valuations after the major indexes ended last week near record levels.

Oil prices remained a major source of uncertainty. Brent crude edged lower on Tuesday after rising 2% to $106.65 a barrel on Monday after deadly strikes on Riyadh's international airport over the weekend.

The price surge threatened to reinforce inflation pressures and complicate the Federal Reserve's policy outlook.

Investors will also look to September consumer price index data due on Wednesday, followed by producer price figures and retail sales on Thursday.

The figures could influence expectations for the Fed's next interest-rate decision, particularly after recent weakness in the labour market raised hopes that policymakers could avoid further tightening.
