Reddit (RDDT) has been listed for only 2.5 years, leaving investors with a short track record to evaluate. Most shareholders likely hold the stock alongside standard index funds that already track broader market movements. So when the market has a good day or a bad one, what does Reddit do to the rest of your money?
Reddit Goes Further Than Your Funds, Both Ways
On average, Reddit moves in the same direction as the broader market, but with wider swings that compound the market risk you already have. Over the past year of daily closes, the S&P 500 gained 0.65% on its average up day. On those days, a $10,000 investment in Reddit stock ended up worth about $10,130. Conversely, the index lost 0.6% on its average down day. That same $10,000 in Reddit ended those negative sessions worth about $9,850.
The stock amplifies market movements in both directions, though the losses on bad days outpace the gains on good ones. Specifically, the shares rose twice as far as the index on the up days and fell about two and a half times as far on the down days.
Two other metrics from the past year illustrate a similar pattern. Reddit's volatility, which measures the spread of its daily movements, sat at 70% a year compared to 13.0% for the S&P 500. Additionally, for each 1% the index moved, Reddit moved about 2% on average.
Has Reddit Rewarded You Well Enough?
The answer is only partly yes, based on the whole period since Reddit listed. Over that stretch, Reddit returned 56% a year, far outpacing the roughly 17% a year logged by the S&P 500. Shareholders earned more than the market, but they absorbed significant turbulence to achieve those gains. Reddit's volatility since it listed reached 81% a year, well above the 15.5% for the index.
Dividing each return by its volatility reveals the payoff for each unit of swing: 0.69 for Reddit since it listed, compared to about 1.1 for the S&P 500. This means Reddit compensates investors less efficiently for the turbulence they endure, even though the stock ultimately delivered higher raw returns.
Can Reddit's Business Calm The Stock Down?
Recent financial results provide little indication that the stock will stabilize. The company's reports point to continued swings matching the past year's pattern. Advertising revenue accounted for $762 million of the $805 million Reddit generated during the second quarter of 2026. This leaves the company with nearly all of its sales coming from a single line of business, though those sales are expanding rapidly. Total revenue rose 61% from a year earlier.
Reddit's audience is proving harder to forecast than its financial top line. Management noted on the July 30, 2026 call that a decline in search referrals offset the daily active users gained through product work. The company also acknowledged having little visibility into search traffic and expects that traffic to stay volatile. A business drawing nearly all its revenue from advertising, while lacking clarity on its search traffic, appears poised to keep moving more than the broader market.
If the pattern of the past year holds, you gain more from Reddit than from your index funds the next time the market rises. When the market falls, however, you lose more than your index funds drop, and more than Reddit provided on the up day. If your other holdings also earn their money from advertisers' budgets, adding Reddit concentrates more of your money on that one bet.
Now you know RDDT better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.
There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
