Investors added $41.6 billion to US-listed ETFs during the week ending Friday, Oct. 9. That brought year-to-date inflows to just shy of $1.6 trillion, putting ETFs on pace for $2 trillion by the end of the year.

US fixed income ETFs led last week with $18.3 billion of inflows, followed by US equity ETFs with $14.2 billion. International equity ETFs took in $4.8 billion, while currency ETFs shed $938 million.

The S&P 500 rallied more than 1% last week and hit a fresh record high on Tuesday. The Nasdaq 100 also notched an all-time high on Tuesday but ended the week only fractionally higher.

Bonds rallied slightly, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury edging down a few basis points—but it remains close to its highest level in almost two decades, at 5.25%.

Among individual ETFs, a big standout was the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ), which picked up $2.3 billion.

The ETF rocketed higher after Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, came out ahead in Brazil's first-round presidential vote on Oct. 4. He took about 47% of the vote to roughly 45% for incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, beating the final polls by a wide margin.

Polls had shown Lula ahead going into the vote, so the result caught markets off guard. After the vote, investors priced in a higher chance of a change in government, and with it, tighter fiscal policy. EWZ is now up 38.5% this year, after starting the month up 18.4%. Bolsonaro and Lula face off in a runoff on Oct. 25.

Another standout on the inflows side was the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT), which took in $1.2 billion.

The highly rate-sensitive ETF is down 7.1% year to date as yields have climbed, but investors have poured $6.2 billion into the fund this year, betting that lower prices and higher yields on long bonds make them a bargain. The 30-year Treasury yield was last trading around 5.6%.

On the outflows side, the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) shed $2.1 billion in what looks like the other side of a heartbeat trade. In a heartbeat trade, a big investor makes a large inflow and pulls it back out a few days later, which lets the fund purge low-cost-basis shares and avoid distributing capital gains.

Elsewhere, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) lost $1.7 billion and the Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) shed $694 million, as some investors took chips off the table on the AI trade.
