Is RIVN a good stock to buy? We came across a bullish thesis on Rivian Automotive, Inc. on Astute Optics - US's Substack. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on RIVN. Rivian Automotive, Inc.'s share was trading at $13.96 as of October 9th 2026.

This isn't the first time we see an automaker pitched as a great investment. Unfortunately, RIVN shares lost 29.17% of their value year to date. Comparable stocks like Ford Motor Company (F) lost 7.24% of their value during the same period. Why are auto stocks declining so much and is it really a good time to buy them?

In April, we published an article about the 10 Best Car Stocks to Buy in 2026 and RIVN ranked #4 in that article. Unfortunately, RIVN has lost 6.55% since then, likely reflecting concerns about cash burn, share dilution, and weaker EV demand. This article explains why TD Cowen, an investment banking firm within TD Securities, also turned bullish on RIVN ahead of the R2 launch. Before getting into our analysis, let's take a look at the business and why some investors like the stock so much.

Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:RIVN) designs and builds electric vehicles, including the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, commercial vans, and its newly launched R2 midsize SUV, along with the software, charging, fleet management, and autonomous-driving technology that support them. Its central investment case right now is the R2 platform, and that's key to understanding whether Rivian can turn years of heavy manufacturing investment into a scalable, higher-volume EV business.

The roughly $45,000 R2 began customer deliveries in June 2026 and was built for lower costs, simpler assembly, and higher production volumes. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue grew about 27% year over year to $1.7 billion, and Rivian posted a record $179 million in quarterly gross profit, marking four straight quarters of positive gross margin. That's real progress, but the company still lost $2.58 per share on a trailing basis, and its stock trades at close to 3.7 times trailing sales — a sign that investors are paying less for what Rivian earns today and more for what they expect the R2 ramp to deliver in profits and cash flow down the road.

The bullish case for Rivian Automotive rests on the idea that higher R2 production volumes and its lower-cost design can steadily improve the company's unit economics. Rivian absorbed about $100 million in one-time costs tied to ramping up R2 production, while its software and services business brought in $515 million of second-quarter revenue at a strong 42% gross margin, generating $215 million in profit that helped offset a $36 million loss on the automotive side. Management is aiming for positive per-unit gross margins on the R2 by the end of 2026, so how quickly the platform can scale while cutting manufacturing costs is central to the turnaround story.

Management also raised its full-year delivery outlook by 3,000 vehicles to a range of 65,000 to 70,000 units, narrowed its expected adjusted EBITDA loss to $1.80-$2.00 billion, and trimmed planned capital spending to $1.70-$1.80 billion. A technology partnership with Volkswagen, potentially worth up to $5.8 billion, is focused on next-generation vehicle electronics and software, with another $1 billion in financing expected later in 2026. After a July equity raise, Rivian had $7.16 billion in available cash and liquidity, enough for roughly two years of runway at its current spending pace. If R2 volumes grow and manufacturing gets more efficient, bulls believe this liquidity and Volkswagen's backing give Rivian enough room to move toward sustainable profitability before funding becomes a pressing concern. Wall Street also leans bullish: the average analyst price target of $19.23 implies roughly 21% upside from Rivian's recent $15.95 share price, while the median target of $18.50 points to about 16% upside. The highest target of $25 suggests as much as 57% upside, while the lowest, at $13, implies around 19% downside. A more conservative, probability-weighted fair-value estimate of $17.21 implies about 8% upside, reflecting caution about how sustainable Rivian's recent margin gains really are. With trailing free cash flow around negative $3.5 billion, investors should watch closely whether rising revenue and margins eventually translate into real earnings and cash flow strong enough to support these price targets.

The biggest risk to this story is the quality of Rivian's recent gross-profit improvement. If the manufacturing turnaround were as strong as it looks, margins should hold up even without help from regulatory credits — but they don't. Regulatory credits added $164 million to gross profit in the first half of the year, accounting for roughly 55% of that profit; excluding those credits, gross margin was only about 4.7%. Those credits are expected to largely disappear in the second half, meaning the underlying improvement is smaller than the headline numbers suggest. Rivian is also still burning significant cash, and part of its liquidity cushion came from a roughly $1.5 billion equity offering in July that added 75 million new shares. Combined with exposure to Chinese battery materials, tariffs, critical-mineral restrictions, high financing costs, shifting EV incentives, and the risk of further dilution, the company has little room for delays in the R2 rollout.

Another risk for the stock is pricing pressure in the EV market. Rivian may need discounts to win R2 buyers, weakening the benefit of its lower-cost design. Driven by competition, larger automakers can use price cuts and incentives to defend sales. Rivian warns that better-funded rivals can absorb these cuts more easily than it can. sec.gov Its turnaround depends on keeping enough of each vehicle's selling price to cover production costs. Higher deliveries could therefore fail to improve profitability if discounts offset manufacturing savings. In our opinion, this could pressure Rivian's price multiples if R2 sales grow without delivering the expected improvement in profits.

Hedge fund positioning shows a cautious signal. As per our database, 40 hedge fund portfolios held Rivian Automotive at the end of the second quarter, down from 45 in the previous quarter. That decline points to institutional investors turning somewhat more cautious on Rivian's R2 launch and turnaround story despite its improving numbers. By comparison, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) was held by 116 hedge funds, down from 123, while Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID) was held by 23 hedge funds, unchanged from the prior quarter, and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) was held by 50, also unchanged. Rivian Automotive saw the steepest drop in hedge fund interest among the four, suggesting institutional conviction is softening even as the company's operating outlook improves.

Short interest data also paints a fairly concerning picture for Rivian Automotive, with 14.90% of its shares sold short — far above Tesla at 2.01% and Ford Motor Company at 3.85%, though still well below Lucid Group at 57.19%. This suggests Rivian's negative cash flow, dilution risk, and dependence on a successful R2 launch are drawing noticeably more skepticism than Tesla or Ford face, even if bearish bets remain far less extreme than those against Lucid.

RIVN's EV/revenue is 3.73x. Tesla, Inc., Lucid Group, Inc., and Ford Motor Company trade at EV/revenue multiples of 14.22x, 2.93x, and 0.98x, respectively. RIVN's own EV/revenue was 4.08x on December 31, 2025, putting its current valuation approximately 9% below that level. We believe the current valuation reflects expectations that the R2 rollout will increase sales and lower manufacturing costs. However, Rivian's premium to Lucid and Ford requires evidence that growing sales can produce sustainable profits, while its discount to Tesla alone does not establish that it is cheap. Rivian Automotive, Inc.'s second-quarter revenue increased approximately 27% year over year to $1.66 billion, but its automotive business still recorded a $36 million gross loss. We believe 3.73 times revenue can be justified if higher R2 volumes spread factory costs across more vehicles and improve margins enough to substantially reduce cash burn. If Rivian can achieve those improvements before needing substantial additional funding, the current valuation could offer an attractive entry point for investors willing to accept the risks of its turnaround.

Previously, we covered a bullish thesis on Rivian Automotive, Inc. (RIVN) by LegitosaurusRex in November 2024, which highlighted the R2 and R3 lineup, Volkswagen funding, cost cuts, and domestic manufacturing advantage. RIVN's stock price has appreciated by approximately 42.28% since our coverage. We believe RIVN could be a good long-term investment, provided higher R2 production improves profitability and reduces cash burn before substantial additional funding is needed.

Rivian Automotive, Inc. is not on our list of the 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. While RIVN could offer long-term upside if higher R2 sales and lower manufacturing costs improve profits and reduce cash burn, we believe some AI stocks offer stronger long-term potential, with a high probability of delivering superior returns on a much shorter timeline.
