Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), the AI-accelerator and networking supplier, faces more competition inside Microsoft's data centers, with shares down 1.7% to $225.32 at approximately 10:24 a.m. ET. According to Barron's, Microsoft is positioning Maia 300 as its main internal inference system. The pressure point is clear: one of Nvidia's biggest customers wants more control over the cost of running AI.

The hardware comparison needs context. According to Reuters' reporting, Microsoft's Maia racks will house 96 processors and draw roughly 167 kilowatts, against 72 GPUs and 142 kilowatts for Nvidia's GB300 racks. Microsoft claims 40% more useful computing per megawatt than unnamed leading GPU systems. That is Microsoft's claim, and processor counts alone cannot settle the performance contest. Nvidia's reported $89 billion in quarterly data-center revenue and 75% gross margin show why customers have a powerful incentive to explore alternatives.
Microsoft does not have to abandon Nvidia to put pressure on its economics. Moving recurring inference jobs onto Maia could trim spending on Nvidia hardware even as AI usage grows. The GF Score of 95/100 shows strong profitability, growth and financial strength, while the weaker GF Value reading makes valuation the standout concern. The next test is deployment: does Maia take workloads Nvidia would otherwise win, or does it simply help Microsoft meet demand that keeps outrunning capacity?
