(Bloomberg) -- A late summer bounce in Tesla Inc. shares contrasts with bearish indicators, leaving the market with questions about which direction the electric vehicle maker's stock will head next.

Tesla stock has advanced 28% from a late-July low, which followed the company's report of a quarterly profit miss and swelling capital expenditures.
Still, shares are down 15% in 2026 so far and have underperformed the benchmark S&P 500's 14% ascent. And technical indicators are also muddled as the company remains years away from achieving its artificial intelligence goals.
"This very near term range captures the stage of purgatory the stock is in longer term," said John Kolovos, chief technical strategist at Macro Risk Advisors.
Tesla's stock price now sits between the 50- and 200-day moving averages, levels that serve as popular gauges of a security's momentum. This position represents a clash between recent strength and potential longer-term sluggishness.
"To keep it real simple, a breakout above the 200-DMA with follow through above $400 resistance would resolve things positively," according to Kolovos. "Conversely, a break under the 50-DMA with follow through under $345 would resolve the range negatively."
Evercore ISI head of technical analysis Rich Ross said that an upswing will be largely contingent on Tesla climbing above the 200-day level and making its way back to $400 per share.
"Tesla above $400 sounds, looks, and trades a lot better," Ross said.
Tesla stock has steadily fallen from December's record high as the market's enthusiasm for its AI products fizzled. According to Ross, without a strong breakout, "we have to operate as if the downtrend is still intact."
The technical uncertainty arises as the Elon Musk-led firm attempts to expand beyond the auto business and dominate the world of physical AI.
JC O'Hara, chief technical strategist at Roth Capital Partners, said Tesla's shares may be poised for a sharp move, and a fundamental catalyst could be necessary to break the stalemate and decide their future path.
Tesla will report third-quarter earnings later this month, and investors hope the company's AI transformation is on track toward unlocking larger profits and steeper share gains.
But conviction in the firm's physical AI products as well as market hopes for a merger with its sibling SpaceX may also be what has shares stuck moving sideways, according to UBS analyst Joseph Spak.
"Investor belief in these long-term value drivers is likely to create a high floor for the stock in the quarters ahead," Spak, who holds a neutral rating on the firm, wrote in a note. "However, with little tangible progress in the short term, we'd expect the stock to remain range bound."
