Nvidia (NVDA:NASDAQ) is in talks to deepen its investment in Reflection AI or buy the company, the Financial Times reported on Saturday.

The report cited people with direct knowledge of the matter. Nvidia has not responded to requests for comment, and Reflection declined to comment.

The talks are still early. One option is an acqui-hire, where Nvidia would hire Reflection's staff and license its technology instead of buying the whole company.

That route could help Nvidia avoid a long regulatory review. A deal could come in the next few weeks, but the talks could also fall apart.

Nvidia already backs Reflection and has invested $800 million in it. The startup was founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou.

It builds tools that automate software development. In April, Laskin told CNBC the company was raising money at a $25 billion pre-money valuation.

Reflection also launched its first open-weight model, Beam, on Monday.

It is meant to compete in coding and agentic tasks with lower-cost Chinese models like DeepSeek and Kimi.

Nvidia stock does not need this deal to look strong. In its latest quarter, Nvidia reported $96 billion in revenue, more than double last year.

It expects revenue to grow about 70% in fiscal 2028. Management says supply is the limit, not demand.

The deal also fits what Nvidia has been saying about AI models. CEO Jensen Huang said on the earnings call that both closed and open models are growing fast.

He added that nearly all open models run on Nvidia. Owning more of an open model startup would deepen that link.

It would also add to Nvidia's bets on AI companies. The company has already invested nearly $50 billion in frontier AI labs.

Huang said that was a small part of its expected free cash flow over the same period.

There are things to watch. Nvidia guided gross margin to 74% next quarter and expects it to dip to 71% to 72% in Q4 because memory costs are rising.

Nvidia stock may also react to how this deal is structured, since an acqui-hire is different from a full buyout.

Nvidia stock has plenty of moving parts right now, and this report adds one more. For now, it is only a report of early talks.
